Charl- Your Question:
Hiya,Firstly I’m so ashamed to even type this I’m so angry and fed up With myself it’s unreal. I was caught by an officer with a gun on an airport perimeter road believing I was in a 40 ( I was doing 49 - it’s a long story but I had got the car that day and was in an absolute panic ) turns out it was a 30 zone and I believe they will now give me 6 points and revoke my license as I’ve had it just under two years - resulting in me losing my job. Any advice would be great thanks Any advice would be great

Our Response:
Did the officer say this would be referred to court? A court summon is usually issued for speeds of 50mph and over, so it may be that this doesn't go to court. If that's the case then a fixed penalty of £100 fine plus 3 points may be issued. If it does proceed to court, the likely penalty is actually between 4 and 6 points. You will only lose your licence if the full 6 points are issued.

Can you tell me how I find out when I did a speed awareness course last

Char2107 - Your Question:
Hi, are you able to take the speed awareness course, if you have only had your license for 6 months?

Our Response:
Yes a speed awareness course can be offered to anyone who's caught speeding within the recommended guidelines and who hasn't already taken a course within the past 3 years. They aren't automatic however, the police can choose whether to offer a fixed penalty or a course.

Talula - Your Question:
My relative has been caught doing 37 in a 30 zone on a fixed camera. He already has 3 points for using phone (expiring 11/08/18) and 3 points for speeding in a 30 zone (expiring 20/05/18) but wasnt offered a course for that as was over threshold. As it is just less than 3 years since his last speeding points but has never done a speed awareness course, do you think he will be offered a course and not pointsThanks

Our Response:
The speed is within the guidelines for the offer of a course, but they are always offered at police discretion so there's no definite yes or no answer for you.

Hi, I just received an NIP where I was caught doing 62mph in 50mph on the M1 where the limit was reduced from 70 to 50. Been driving a year & 8 months, first driving offence. What is the likelyhood I’ll get the course rather than the FPN.
Nickie - 22-Apr-18 @ 7:20 PM
Hi i got flashed the other day on the m62 batween rochdale and heywood my dash cam says i was doing 90 in a 70 what can i expect? Thanks

Will - Your Question:
Hello, I was caught by a mobile speed camera doing about 88 in a 70 on a duel carriageway (A404). I have only had my license for just under a year so what are the likely outcome and options for me. Would I be elegible for a speed awareness course?

Our Response:
It's likely that you were travelling too fast to be eligible for a speed awareness course. The likely penalty therefore would be 3 points plus a £100 fine. A court summons is usually issued for speeds of 96mph and above.

User1 - Your Question:
Hi all,I got caught speeding on a 70mph doing 96mph on the A3.4 years of driving behind me, and this would be my first speeding ticketWhat's the normal outcome on this?

Our Response:
96 is the level at which a court summons would usually be issued, so expect that. 96mph in a 70 zone will attract a band B fine (at least one week's income) and between 4 to 6 points and/or 7 -28 day ban. You may be lucky (as it's right on the cusp) and receive a conditional offer of £100 fine plus 3 penalty points without having to appear in court.

els - Your Question:
Hi wonder if anyone can help me I was caught doing 37 in 30 bad I kno but I havent been driving a year?

Our Response:
The likely penalties are either 3 points plus £100 fine or the offer of a speed awareness course (not always offered). If you already have points you should note that once you have 6 points within two years of driving on a full licence, your licencewill be revoked under the New Drivers Act

Hi, This is unfortunate I know but I was caught for speeding 3 years ago on 06/03/2015 (61mph in 40mph zone Surry Police) at the time I was given 3 points and a £100 fine and have now been flashed again on 05/03/2018 (1 day short of my 3 year term!!) on an average fixed speed camera at 70mph in a defined 60mph zone (Staffordshire Police). Would I be entitled to a course do you think? Or have I got more points coming my way? And should I just send an apology letter with my return details request; highlighting a modest request for leniency? would it even work or would it work against me? thanks

Kieren - Your Question:
Hi, I am currently within my 2 year probation period and I have been caught doing 49 mph in a 40 mph zone. Do I qualify to sit the speed awareness course rather then recieving the fine and points?

Our Response:
The speed is within the relevant guideline limits for a speed awareness course, but it's up to the police to decide whether or not to offer you one.
NoPenaltyPoints - 26-Mar-18 @ 11:13 AM
neddo - Your Question:
Do you have to inform your insurance company if you take the speed awareness course? I am in the process to see if I was unlucky enough to get caught yesterday, still on hooks !!!

Our Response:
This will depend on the terms and conditions of your insurance policy, so you will need to check those.

Hello.I was driving the works van and I was gunned by manned camera doing 48 in a 40 zone . I sent them a letter and they did not give me the opportunity to attend the course but only to send my license to them and pay the fine. What can I do next? Can I call the course to see what they say? or what?

Gazza - Your Question:
Hello I want to no if I can attend to awarenes course I attended 1 course 2 and half years ago when I got flased on a 30 mph I was doing 36mph and I recently got flased on a 20mph road were I did 30 mphDoes there awarenes course change to the speed I do thanks

Our Response:
No, you can't be offered a speed awareness course if you've already taken one in the past three years. It's not dependent on the speed zone you were travelling in.
NoPenaltyPoints - 27-Feb-18 @ 2:03 PM
chris - Your Question:
Went on a spped awareness course on 4/3/ 2015 , caught on 18/2/2018 , 37 in 30 zone, period is two weeks short of 3 years , however, it says you cant attend two courses in under three years, but the course only has to be taken within four months of the offence , so if the course was made for one months time, the gap between the courses would be OVER three years , and allowable , which is the correct outcome.

Our Response:
It's usually calculated as three calendar years from your current offence...which in your case would be 18/2/2015. This means it's unlikely you'll be offered a course, unless your local police authority thinks differently.

Shaun - Your Question:
I was driving the works van and I was gunned by manned camera doing 36 in a 30 zone, the road was a long stretch of road called Dudley Lane in cramlington, newcastle, the road conjoined by 3 roundabouts. Is got two lanes either side of the road and oncoming traffic is segregated by bushes and trees it's a 40 MPH limit, but on one the last stretch of the road it changes to 30 MPHBut it remains a Dule carrageway but if you miss the 30mph sign there is no other signs on the remainder of the road to make you aware of the speed limit, all the lampposts are the same distance as the 40 MPH part of the Dule carrageway which is why I was under the impression that the road was infact a 40 zone.

Our Response:
Is the 30mph an hour sign obscured? There should ideally be a sign on both sides of the road if it'sdual carriageway in the event that signs are obscured by lorries etc. If you simply "missed" the sign, you can't really contest it.

Hi. I have 3 points already. And I have been caught doing 80 in a 70. I am still 2 months away from my 2 year new driver probation period.Could I be offered the speed awareness ? Thank You in advance

Our Response:
80mph in a 70 zone is within the recommended guidelines for the offer of a speed awareness course but these are always offered at the discretion of the police.
