Do you think you've been caught speeding recently?

You may be eligible to take a speed awareness course as an alternative to penalty points (and a fine).

There are several factors that will affect your chances, which is why we've created the SpeedUlator Speed Awareness Course Checker. It's interactive, easy to use and will help you decide what to do next.

Try the Speed-U-Lator here:

Simply click on the relevant answer and you'll be led through the next steps.

If you now know from our checker that you will not be offered a speed awareness course, why not read through some of the other options available to you in our speeding section.

How can I find out when I attended my speed awareness course. Insurance have me down as having points but the only letter I have had I attended the course for. So surely I shouldn’t have any.

How do I check when I last went on a speed awareness course to see if it was over 3 years ago?
Armchair - 26-Jan-19 @ 9:48 AM
I was on an expressway travelling at 60mph, which then drops to 40mph. I was caught by a police motorcyclist using a hand held speed gun a very short distance into the 40mph zone. The officer was stopped on the hard shoulder of the expressway, which also had 'clearway' signs posted, which mean no stopping unless in emergency, so my question is Can the officer legally do this when he himself is actually committing 2 offences of the Road Traffic Act?
Twodogs - 4-Jan-19 @ 2:11 PM
I was caught driving 60mph in the smart motorway which is 50mph but there was no signs saying it was 50mph at that time but my concern is will I be offered the speed awareness course as last year I had a level crossing awareness course had never driven around level crossings prior to that day so wasn’t really familiar with the lights though only 1 red light came on and nothing else. So was wondering what the level crossing awareness course affect the speed awareness course if they offered it to me or wouldn’t make any difference as it’s two different types of awareness courses. Any kind of answer would be grateful Many thanks

Hello, I've a clean licence for over 50 years.Received two separate NIPs for the same day in two separate locations in one rural county.I'm horrified to have been so apparently stupid.Think there's probably not much realistic chance of creating a technical argument in either case.First (hand held speed gun) was 39mph in a 30 limit, and an hour later (parked police van camera) 62mph in a 50 limit. Question is do I reply to both NIPs at the same time with apologetic letter and hope to avoid 6 points (unlikely, I suppose)or do I treat the NIPs quite separately and hope that one might become a course offer? What would be the best tactic - or any other suggestions much appreciated. Thanks.-Mike

Im sure the last time I took a speed awareness course was longer than 3 years ago, but I cant be sure. can you tell me where to go to get this information? ive looked everywhere. DVLA, Google and I cant see anything relating to actually checking when I last took a course, can you help please. ive got 3 speeding tickets coming up and my licence is clean so im trying to see if 2 of the speeding fines coming through can be put on speed courses as they are both within the limits.

I have had a crash on the motorway and the police officer has put me on an awareness course (having never had an offence previously). However, 2 days after the crash I was sent a NIP showing I was doing 39 in what I thought was a 40zone, obviously I was wrong and it was 30. This NIP shows the incident took place a week before my crash. Will i be offered a speeding course as well as the original awareness course ? Or will I likely have to take the 3 points. Secondly, the speeding ticket wa sent to my partner and she had to fill this out in my name and send back - how long does it take to get the reply? Many thanksc

Ollyolly - Your Question:
Just got a letter of prosecution for doing 85 in a 70. my issue is the letter is in my recently dead fathers name who has never lived at my address and died before I bought the car so has no relation to the car either receiving the letter for my dead father was upsetting enough without the fine on top as well what should I do

Our Response:
Did you buy the car from your father? Did he ever own it?

Dene- Your Question:
Hi, I recently received a speeding ticket for doing 69 in variable motorway 50 zone. I checked calibration document on line. Camera was due calibration 2 weeks before alleged offence. Should I challenge this in Court, (?) as I think they attached calibration document, thinking people won't check.as it could have been affected by recent cold / hot weather. Any advice would be great.

Our Response:
We can't really advise you either way, it would be up to a judge to decide whether to accept that the speed measurement was invalid because the calibration certificate had expired. The police may however, be able to provide evidence that the equipment was tested in other ways or that the camera had been calibrated but the records hadn't been updated etc.
